Review of CoTeSys 1st International Workshop 2008

10/23/2008 : 15:05

The first time on an international scale – and so successful. The original idea of a single-track workshop had to be given up soon once the Program Committee had decided that 42 papers were of such high quality that they should be presented.

In addition to the reviewed papers, presentations from related projects in Germany and other countries had been invited. Hence, for the first time a direct comparison of clusters and joint projects was possible to a large audience. Helge Ritter presented the “Cognitive Interaction Technology” Cluster in Bielefeld, and from Karlsruhe Christoph Stiller SFB/TR 28 “Cognitive Automobile”, Rüdiger Dillmann SFB 588 "Humanoid Robots". Susanne Biundo (Univ. of Ulm) presented a concept for a joint project on "Companion Technology for cognitive technical systems". International work of high excellence was presented by Stefan Schaal (USC), Chad Jenkins (Brown University), and Joris de Schutter (KU Leuven).

Due to the growing interest world-wide in the topics dealt with by CoTeSys and resulting from the Cluster’s successful international networking, the Extended Board of CoTeSys had decided right after the internal workshop in April, 2008, to turn the one planned for October into an international event. Although only a limited time span was available for preparing the workshop as an international conference, the result confirmed the need: interest was much larger than anticipated. The audience was excited to be given the chance to learn and discuss, concentrated by time and location, the state of the art during these 2 valuable days.
